Ahadith regarding Imam al-Mahdi (af)

The Messenger of Allah, Prophet Muhammad (s):

When asked by Jabir bin ‘Abdillah al-Ansari: ‘Will the Shi’a benefit from the Qa’im during his concealment?’ He (s) said: “Just as the sun benefits behind the clouds.”

[Bihar al- Anwar, v.52, ch.20, p.92]

Imam ‘Ali ibn Abi Talib (as):

“[When Imam al-Mahdi makes his advent,] The following of the lower desires will be transformed into the following of guidance (from Allah SWT), after the following of the guidance (from Allah SWT) had been transformed into the following of the lower desires; and the thoughts and opinions (of the people) will be in line with the Holy Qur’an, after the Holy Qur’an had previously been put in line and accordance with the people’s thoughts and opinions.”

[Biharul Anwar, v.51, p.120; Nahjul Balagha]

Imam al-Hasan (as):

“Allah SWT will help him with His signs and bring him back among the people of the earth so that he brings them to the religion, willingly or unwillingly. He (al-Mahdi) will fill the earth with justice and equity.”

[Ithbat al-Huda, v.5, p.145]

Imam al-Husain (as):

“From us there are twelve Mahdis, the first of whom is Amirul Momineen Ali b. Abu Talib (as), and the last of whom is my ninth descendant. And he is truly the Imam al-Qaim. Allah SWT will enliven the earth after its death through him, and through him triumph His religion over all [other] religions, even if the polytheists may dislike this. There will be occultation for him, during which [some] communities will leave the faith, but others will remain steadfast on religion. [The latter group] will be tortured and told: ‘If you are true, [then] when will this promise be fulfilled?’ Know that one who observes patience during those tribulations will be like the one who fights the holy war under the command of the Messenger of Allah (s).”

[Kamal ad-Din, v.2, ch.30]

Imam ‘Ali Zainul Abideen (as):

“Indeed the people who live during the time of his occultation, who have firm belief in his (the 12th Imam’s) Imamate and are awaiting his advent, are the best people from any age, since Allah SWT… has granted them from the intellect, understanding and cognizance needed to live during the period of the occultation, as if they were living during the time of his advent.”

[Biharul Anwar, v.52, p.122; al-Ihtijaj]

Imam Muhammad al-Baqir (as):

“ … When al-Qa’im makes his advent, friendship and unity will be established to such a degree that a person will be able to put his hand in his brother-in-faith’s pocket and take whatever he needs, without his brother preventing him from doing so!”

[Wasa’il ash-Shi’a, v.7, p.324, hadith 3]

Imam Ja’far as-Sadiq (as):

“Knowledge is contained in twenty-seven letters (parts) and everything which all of the (previous) messengers brought was merely two of these letters. Until the day (when al-Mahdi makes his advent), the people will not be given knowledge except of these two letters. When our Qa’im makes his advent, he will bring with him the other twenty-five letters (of knowledge), and he will spread these amongst the people and add these to the previous two letters (parts), such that he will have imparted the twenty-seven letters (of knowledge) to them.”

[Wasa’il ash-Shi’a, v.7, p.326, hadith 10]

Imam Musa al-Kadhim (as):

Blessed are those of our Shias who during the occultation of our Qaim remain attached to our Wilayat (guardianship), who are steadfast in devotion to us, and who have distanced themselves from our enemies. They are from us and we are from them. And indeed they have preferred us for Imamate and we have also selected them as our followers (Shia). Congratulations to them and blessed be they (Shias). By Allah SWT, on the Day of Judgment they shall be in our vicinity.”

[Kamal ad-Din, v.2, ch.34]

Imam ‘Ali al-Ridha (as):

Abdullah b. Abaan asked the Imam (as) to pray for him, before he travelled. The Imam (as) replied: “Do you think we do not pray for you? I swear by God that your actions are presented to us every morning and every evening.

On seeing Abdullah’s doubt, Imam (as) said: “Have you not read in God’s book:

وَقُلِ اعْمَلُوا فَسَيَرَى اللَّهُ عَمَلَكُمْ وَرَسُولُهُ وَالْمُؤْمِنُونَ ۖ وَسَتُرَدُّونَ إِلَىٰ عَالِمِ الْغَيْبِ وَالشَّهَادَةِ فَيُنَبِّئُكُمْ بِمَا كُنْتُمْ تَعْمَلُونَ

And say: Do your Am’al; so Allah will see your work and (so will) His Messenger and the believers; and you shall be brought back to the Knower of the unseen and the seen, then He will inform you of what you did. (9:105)

I swear by Allah SWT ‘the Believers’ in this verse refers to Ali ibn Abi Talib and the Imams from his progeny.”

[Al-Kafi (Kulayni) v.1, p.219, hadith 4]

Imam Muhammad al-Jawad (as):

“…Indeed al-Qa’im is from among us (the Ahlul Bayt), and he is al-Mahdi: the one for whom it is obligatory to wait during his occultation and obey during his advent, and he is the third from my progeny…” Then he said, “The best action of our Shias is to wait for his reappearance.”

[Kamal ad-Din, v.2, ch.36]

Imam Ali al-Naqi (as):

“…Saturday is the day for the Messenger of Allah (s), Sunday is the day of Amirul Momineen, Ali, Monday is the day for Imams Hasan and Husain, Tuesday is the day for Ali bin Husain (Zainul Abideen), Muhammad bin Ali (al-Baqir) and Ja’far bin Muhammad (al-Sadiq), Wednesday is the day for Musa bin Ja’far (al-Kadhim), Ali bin Musa (al-Ridha) and Muhammad bin Ali (al-Jawad), Thursday is the day for my son, Hasan (al-Askari) and Friday, is the day for the  son of my son (Muhammad al-Mahdi).

And it is through him (al-Mahdi) that the party of truth will gather and it is him that would fill the earth with justice and truth just as it would have been fraught with injustice and oppression.”

[Kamal ad-Din, v.2, ch.37]

Imam Hasan al-’Askari (as):

“ …One who dies and does not have Marifah (cognizance) of him (Imam al-Mahdi), dies the death of Jahiliyyah (ignorance)… ”

[Biharul Anwar, v.51, p.160; Kamal ad-Din]

Imam Muhammad al-Mahdi (af):

Increase your supplication for the hastening of the reappearance, for therein lies your own salvation…”

[Kamaal ul-Din v.2 p.485]
